YJK2 Part2

 Hey, I accidentally posted about Doom on here yesterday. Or clever cross promotion for the other blog. Whichever.

So, let's finish complaining about this book.

1. The Academy is "cool and dank" again. At least it's not comfy and humid or whatever, but this is a phrase they've used before. There's a lot of stock description in these books.

2. This is also the second time someone has stolen Luke's lightsaber (or maybe first, I'm reading these series out of sync). Either way, he should really lock it up.

3. Lando shows up and takes the twins to his latest get rich quick scheme, Gemdiver Station. It's harvesting SUPER SPACE DIAMONDS from Yavin. Jacen asks if he can see one, and Lando has to think for a minute before he says yes. What was your plan, Lando? That's like going on the Hershey tour and not getting a candy bar at the end.

4. Trolling is not the same word as Trawling. Sigh.

5. The Nightsisters are back. They're even "well trained and even more dangerous." Considering the fact that the Emperor himself was terrified of them, this feels like it should be a bigger deal. They're just treated as a run of the mill dark Jedi sect.

6. Not a complaint, but it's kind of weird that this is the most callback heavy book in the EU so far. Most of the others are, at most, linked with a couple others. This is full of references to other books (mostly Courtship of Princess Leia, ick.)

7. Brakiss just comes out of nowhere. Considering how heavy of a hand Anderson had in the EU, it seems like he probably could've set this up a little better. (Again, considering all the continuity in this book.

8. Speaking of Brakiss, did you know he's beautiful? It doesn't actually matter (it's not like he's seducing anyone or anything) they just can't think of any other adjectives for him so they say it over and over.

9. The entire Luke and Tenel Ka looking for the twins subplot is incredibly awkward. Why does no one recognize Luke (I've ranted about this before), how is sending him and TK the best plan they can come up with, how are they so sure the Nightsisters will lead them to the kids, why are they flirting so much?

10. Not a complaint, but who is the new Imperial leader they keep talking about? Palpatine is dead-dead (ugh, Dark Empire), most of the good warlords/grand admirals are dead (Thrawn/Zsinj), I think Isaard is dead? The X-Wing books jump around a little, but I think they're all before this. It better not be another random dark Jedi who gets killed in two books.

11. Qorl (the TIE pilot from last book) is back. Seems a convenient coincidence that of all the Imperial remnant bases he's on the one that happens to kidnap the Solo kids. They're still making a big deal about his brainwashing. Why is this random TIE pilot super brainwashed? A bunch of others defected no problem.

12. Why does Tenel Ka speak like... I don't even know what. It's a combination of all the annoying alien speech patterns in everything else. Doesn't like contractions, super literal, etc. None of the other Dathomirites (Dathomirians?) or Hapans have this issue.  "This is a fact" is, in fact, a terrible catch phrase.

ANH Radio Drama I've talked before about how the radio drama is my favorite adaptation of the OT. In many ways, it serves the role often played by a novelization by expanding on the original story moreso than the actual novels (particularly ANH). If you haven't listened, bounce over to Youtube: Or The Internet Archive  and have a listen. George Lucas cut the University of Southern California (his alma mater) a sweetheart dollar deal to license the story, music, and sound effects. Brian Daley (who wrote the Han Solo trilogy earlier) did the scripts. In the modern era of big budget podcasts and audiobooks, it's a little harder to express how freaking cool these were as a kid into Star Wars in the 90s (though the Jedi adaptation wasn't produced until 1996). 1. Splinter of the Mind's Eye (1978) by Alan Dean Foster

Splinter of the Mind's Eye Sweet Ralph Macquarie cover art, courtesy of Wookiepedia! Summary: Luke and Leia crash on a swamp planet. Leia has PTSD. Luke has a crush on her. They go looking for the Kaiburr Crystal with cranky Force grandma and replacement Chewie twins. Darth Vader shows up and mostly kicks their asses, but he falls in a hole. What it introduces: Naming things X of the Y : Which would hold for 4 of the 9 movies, 70ish novels, and numerous video games, comics, etc. The Kaiburr Crystal: Shards of which would become the most desirable lightsaber focusing crystals in the later EU. Kyber crystals would make an appearance in the new canon as both lightsaber crystals and part of the Death Star's superlaser.  Commentary:   Splinter of the Mind's Eye is widely considered the first book in the Expanded Universe. Dark Force Rising and The Last Command (1992 and 1993)

It's been how long since I did one of these? How did I format them? I think after over explaining Heir to the Empire I'm going to go a little more informal with these. Honestly, I don't love 'em. I talked before about how HttE  Thrawn is peak Xanatos-scheming. In the later books, the plans get kind of goofy. The asteroid blockade of Coruscant in particular stands out. 1. A cloaking device in combat (briefly) or when you're not being looked for (slip in) is one thing. Putting them on asteroids and parking them over Coruscant is dumb. Couldn't you just use some space glitter to reveal them? Or make a corridor with tractor beams? Something? 2. They're real trusting about Karrde's count. "Haha! I had more asteroids!" is very Thrawn. The entire "off camera" Katana fleet hijacking is kind of disappointing as well. I get the urge to go for "I did it 35 minutes ago", but it's the climax/set piece for the second book, and it'...
